First championship for franchise since 1980

Game 5: London 2 at Tecumseh 5

Ryan Viselli scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Tecusmeh Chiefs to a 5-2 win over the London Nationals and clinch the Bill Weir Trophy as 2008 WOHL Champions in front of 1182 spectators at Tecumseh Arena on Wednesday.

Wednesday's title-clincher was the Chiefs' fourth straight victory since losing game one on home ice. The five-game series victory is the first title for the franchise since they moved to Tecumseh from Windsor in 1995. The last time the franchise won the league title was in 1980 when the then Windsor Royals won the Western Junior 'B' crown.

Viselli (right), who was second in league scoring during the regular season, scored his goals exactly two minutes apart in the second period as the Chiefs scored three unanswered goals in the middle frame to erase a 2-1 London lead. Matt Rehman added an empty net goal with four seconds left in the game to seal the championship and spark the celebration.

After the two teams had traded goals to start the game, a successful penalty shot attempt by Andrew Wilson late in the first had given the Nationals a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission before the Chiefs' three-goal rally in the second.

Chiefs veteran netminder Jonathan Hunter stopped 30 of 32 shots faced for his fourth straight victory. Torrin Lauziere started in net for the Nationals and allowed four goals on 26 shots before being replaced after two periods by Stephen Heming who stopped all 15 shots faced in the third.

David Sharpe had three assists and Dan Reaume chipped in with two helpers for Chiefs. Graham Spriel, a call-up from the Aylmer Spitfires Jr. 'C' team, scored the other goal for the Nationals.

Viselli, who had at least one point in all five games, led all scorers in the series with eight points (four goals, four assists). Sharpe led the Chiefs with five assists.

The top scorer in this year's WOHL playoffs is Chiefs forward Garrett Wilson, who had 13 goals and eight assists for 21 points in 14 games. Wilson is a Windsor Spitfires draft pick who recently played in three playoff games for the OHL club.

The Nationals have now been on the losing end of all three finals appearances since 2001. Their last championship was in 1992 when they defeated the Windsor Bulldogs.

The Chiefs now advance to the round-robin portion of the GOJHL Sutherland Cup Championship against the Midwestern and Golden Horseshoe champions. The six-game double round-series, which will eliminate one team and determine the two Sutherland Cup finalists, will begin sometime around the April 12 weekend.
