The Brantford Golden Eagles and the City of Brantford have waited 68 years to get their hands on the Sutherland Cup. They last and only time Brantford won was 1941 when the Brantford Lions sweep a best of 5 series over Oshawa. The 2008-2009 Eagles did not want to let this chance slip away.

At a packed market Street Arena in Dundas, the Eagles would strike first taking lead of 1-0 into the first intermission. The second period would see both teams tally one goal each. The third period opened up with a quick goal by Stoney Creek but was overshadowed by what proved to be the game winner from Brantford's Chris Dunham. Brantford would then hold on to their 3-2 lead.

This game was similar to Eagles season where they always seemed to have that little extra edge to win.

The Eagles outstanding 2008-2009 season included winning the GOJHL Regular Season Championship with a total of 88 points out of 102, winning the Cherry Cup over the Kitchener Dutchmen 4 games to 1 and now the pinnacle the Sutherland Cup in similar fashion over the Stoney Creek Warriors.

Eagles, Head Coach Scott Rex was overjoyed as his team celebrated on the ice. Rex now a two time Sutherland Cup Champion, winning in 1986 as a player with the Stratford Cullitons. Even Mike Down, Assistant Coach said it was a surreal moment as he watched his players, executive celebrate with their families on the ice after the game.

Runners-up Stoney Creek Warriors did themselves proud as they have come a very long way over the past season where they sat in 6th place in the Golden Horse Conference with record just above .500 in the 2007-2008 campaign. With an enthusiastic ownership group now with one year under their belts and bench Boss Ric Natress, Stoney Creek have already set a goal to get back to the Sutherland Cup Finals next season.

The Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey Association would like to thank both the Stoney Creek Warriors and Brantford Golden Eagles for a well played series. The GOJHL would also like to acknowledge all of the players, team executive, coaching staff, and volunteers of both teams for all their hard work, efforts during the season.

The league would also like to thank the players families, fans of both teams for their support during the year. And a special thank you to the town of Dundas and both the Real McCoys and Blues Hockey Clubs for embracing the Stoney Creek Warriors and the league during the Sutherland Cup playoffs.
