Western Wins All Star Game 5 to 4
"Western Gains Home Ice Advantage In 1st Round OHA Playoffs"
The first Junior C showdown between the All Star Team from the Western Junior C Hockey League and the best of the Georgian Bay Mid-Ontario Hockey League lived up to the hype.
The Western Junior C All Stars overcame an early 3-1 deficit then had to hold on for a 5-4 win over the Georgian Bay League Sunday afternoon in Mount Forest. The win gives the Western Junior C Hockey League home-ice advantage in the first round of the Ontario Hockey Association playoffs.
Penetang's Tyler Lumley scored just over four minutes in to give the Georgian Bay League first blood but Kevin Baetz of the Mitchell Hawks answered just over a minute later.
Brad Baum of Penetang and Randy Cox of Alliston scored goals exactly a minute apart as the Georgian Bay League busted out to a 3-1 lead by the midway mark of the first period.
The Western stars got settled down and Jason Tremble of Hanover, Walkerton's Kevin Quincey and Jim Hutchison of Hanover scored goals in a five minute span to put the Western league ahead 4-3 at the end of the first period.
Ryan Maganin of Mitchell scored the lone goal of the second period to make it 5-3.
With just over six minutes to go, Cody Murphy of the Erin Shamrocks scored to cut the margin to one and set up a frantic finish.
Wingham's Jason Hamilton played the first period for the Western League and was relieved by Clayton Fritsch of Walkerton. Curt Daniels of Stayner started and finished for the Georgian Bay League.
Tyler Hogan of the Erin Shamrocks was named the Georgian Bay MVP.
Magagnin, who was an alternate, got the word late Saturday night that he would be in the line-up. He was inserted after an injury to Steve Collins of Walkerton. Magagnin, with a goal and an assist, was named the MVP of the Western All Stars.
