OHA Officials To Wear Neckguards

Ref2_medium

News Release By OHA 07 January, 2010

Effective Feb. 1, 2010, officials in the Ontario Hockey Association will be required to wear neckguards. That decision was reached by the OHA Board of Directors at its Jan. 6, 2010 meeting.

In the interim period leading up to February 1st, OHA officials are encouraged to act on this matter before the mandatory date.

“One of our mandates as the caretaker of junior hockey in Ontario is to ensure that our players, and our officials, are as safe as possible,” said OHA chairman Dick Woods.

Neckguards for players became mandatory at the beginning of the 2008-09 season.

The decision to review the use of neckguards for officials was in response to the serious injury to OHA linesman Kevin Brown December 29th, 2009 during a Junior C game in Woodstock. Brown suffered a severed artery in the process of breaking up a fight. He remains in hospital.

Leo Lostracco, chair of the referee executive committee, presented the motion to adopt neckguards for officials. The motion was also endorsed by OHA referee-in-chief Gary Moroney.

OHA President Brent Ladds stated that the OHA Board is deeply concerned with the situation and will undertake to assist Kevin Brown and his family through the OHA.

Ladds further stated notwithstanding the infrequency of an accident of this nature, the OHA Board rationalized their decision by stating that if an accident of this nature could happen once, it could happen again!

Western Jr C Players Take It Outside

Two rival players in the Western Junior C Hockey League took it "outside" the 1st week of January. Mac Campbell of the Mitchell Hawks, in the Ottawa Senators sweater, and Chad Woodhouse of the Goderich Sailors, battle for a loose puck on the Avon River in Stratford. The two friends are Stratford residents.

Western Jr C All Star Game

The first Junior C showdown between the All Star Team from the Western Junior C Hockey League and the best of the Georgian Bay Mid-Ontario Hockey League lived up to the hype.

The Western Junior C All Stars overcame an early 3-1 deficit then had to hold on for a 5-4 win over the Georgian Bay League Sunday afternoon in Mount Forest. The win gives the Western Junior C Hockey League home-ice advantage in the first round of the Ontario Hockey Association playoffs.

Penetang's Tyler Lumley scored just over four minutes in to give the Georgian Bay League first blood but Kevin Baetz of the Mitchell Hawks answered just over a minute later.

Brad Baum of Penetang and Randy Cox of Alliston scored goals exactly a minute apart as the Georgian Bay League busted out to a 3-1 lead by the midway mark of the first period.

The Western stars got settled down and Jason Tremble of Hanover, Walkerton's Kevin Quincey and Jim Hutchison of Hanover scored goals in a five minute span to put the Western league ahead 4-3 at the end of the first period.

Ryan Maganin of Mitchell scored the lone goal of the second period to make it 5-3.

With just over six minutes to go, Cody Murphy of the Erin Shamrocks scored to cut the margin to one and set up a frantic finish.

Wingham's Jason Hamilton played the first period for the Western League and was relieved by Clayton Fritsch of Walkerton. Curt Daniels of Stayner started and finished for the Georgian Bay League.

Tyler Hogan of the Erin Shamrocks was named the Georgian Bay MVP.

Magagnin, who was an alternate, got the word late Saturday night that he would be in the line-up. He was inserted after an injury to Steve Collins of Walkerton. Magagnin, with a goal and an assist, was named the MVP of the Western All Stars.
