The Penetanguishene Kings kicked off its 2007/2008 hockey season with a pair of wins.
On Sunday, Sept. 23, the Kings traveled to Fergus to compete against the Devils, and won 4-3 in overtime.
Scoring for the Kings were Brad Baum, Aaron Duval, Kelly Loughran and Kevin Imhoff with the overtime winner.
Scoring for Fergus were Jesse Booker, Dave Cutten and Ryley Scott.
Kings goalie Chris Daniels stopped 36 of 39 Devil shots.
The Kings' special teams were successful, scoring two powerplay goals and one short-handed goal.
However, the Kings offence was shaken when Fergus scored two quick goals with about eight minutes left in the game to tie it at three apiece.
"I think our conditioning and stamina came into effect, but we expect that not to be a habit of ours, so we're going to work on that," Kings coach Wesley Parent said of the Fergus game.
On Friday, Sept. 21, the Kings played against Stayner Siskins in front of a home crowd at the Penetanguishene Memorial Community Centre (PMCC). It was an emotional night for the returning players, according to Parent, as last season's provincial championship banner was raised to the rafters. The team played an upbeat game and won 5-1. Scoring for the Kings were Baum and Duval each with two goals while Shane Martin added a single tally. Daniels made 21 saves. Scoring for the Siskins was Kyle Gray.
Parent said a few of his players didn't control their emotions as they should have.
"Stayner in the past has had a rough-and-tough team. It looks like they're going to try to hold that style again this season," Parent said.
Tonight, join members of the Penetanguishene Kings hockey club for public skating at the PMCC from 6:15 until 7:45 p.m. (The players will only be on the ice until 7:15 p.m.) It should be a great opportunity to meet the players. The team will then play against Fergus; gametime is 8:30 p.m.
