The Penetang Kings paid homage to their recent past and kicked off a new Junior C hockey season in style in their home opener last Friday night. Powered by a two-goal efforts from Brad Baum and Aaron Duval, the Kings cruised to a 5-1 win over the Stayner Siskins in their regular season home opener, played in front 331 fans. Sunday evening in Fergus, the Kings improved their record to 2-0, posting a 4-3 overtime win over the Fergus Devils. “Both games were definitely very positive for us. The game against Fergus we kind of let slip away from us for a while,” said Kings head coach Wes Parent. Leading 3-1 with about seven minutes remaining in the third period, the Kings gave up two goals 15 seconds apart to let Fergus back in the game. “Our legs definitely went to sleep on us in the third period,” noted Parent. Kelly Loughran, Brad Baum, Aaron Duval and Kevin Imhoff each tallied goals for the Kings to improve their regular season record to 2-0. On Friday, Penetanguishene Mayor Anita Dubeau was on hand to officially drop the puck to get the 2007-2008 Georgian Bay Mid-Ontario Junior C Hockey League season underway. “I was a little worried about controlling our emotions the way we needed to. Throughout courses of the game there were times when even some of our veterans didn’t even control their emotions the way they needed to and did get into some penalty trouble,” said Parent. Moments earlier, the Kings raised their 2007 league and provincial championship banners to the rafters of the Penetanguishene Arena. It marked the second time in as many years that the team has celebrated a provincial Junior C hockey championship win. Besides the two goals from Baum and Duval, Shane Martin added a single. Kelly Loughran, Duval, Evan Cole, Graig Speers and Greg Cerilli each contributed single assists. Chris Daniels picked up the goaltending win, in a game where the two teams combined for 131 minutes in penalties. The Kings led 2-1 after one period and expanded their lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Also on Friday, the Penetang Kings host the Fergus Devils in an 8:30 p.m. contest.
Prior to the game, the Ontario champions will have their annual Skate With the Kings event from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., at the Penetanguishene Arena.
