Thorold 3 at Elmira 6
The Elmira Sugar Kings (1-0) scored the game's first three goals and never looked back en route to a 6-3 win over the Thorold Blackhawks (0-2) in a GOJHL Sutherland Cup round-robin game Sunday in front of 744 spectators at Elmira Arena.
The Sugar Kings opened the scoring with a pair of power play goals 52 seconds apart midway through the opening frame and added a shorthanded marker late in the period to build a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
John Lunney (right) led the Elmira attack with a goal and three assists, while Jeremy Hilliard scored twice. Brock Zinken added a pair of assists.
Sugar Kings netminder Dan Morrison made 43 saves for the win. Rick Scarsella started in net for the Blackhawks and allowed three goals on 23 shots before being replaced after the first period by Marcus Menard, who allowed three goals on 33 shots over the final two periods.
